Cow escapes NJ slaughterhouse, will be spared

PATERSON, N.J. (AP) ? A cow that escaped from a New Jersey slaughterhouse will be spared.

The black-and-white bovine was running through the streets of Paterson sometime after 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Animal control officer John De Cando tells The Record newspaper (http://bit.ly/IqWC6F) it was like "Dodge City" with police cars trying to corral the 750-pound animal. But the cow managed to break loose.

De Cando tranquilized the cow after it became trapped between a fire hydrant and a truck.

De Cando says the slaughterhouse owner has promised to take the animal to a farm.

No one was injured.

A University of Oklahoma assistant professor and colleagues have identified two white dwarf stars considered the oldest and closest known to man. Astronomers identified these 11- to 12-billion-year-old white dwarf stars only 100 light years away from Earth. These stars are the closest known examples of the oldest stars in the Universe forming soon after the Big Bang, according to the OU researcher.

Mukremin Kilic, assistant professor of physics and astronomy in the OU College of Arts and Sciences and lead author on a recently published paper, announced the discovery. Kilic says, "A white dwarf is like a hot stove; once the stove is off, it cools slowly over time. By measuring how cool the stove is, we can tell how long it has been off. The two stars we identified have been cooling for billions of years."

Kilic explains that white dwarf stars are the burned out cores of stars similar to the Sun. In about 5 billion years, the Sun also will burn out and turn into a white dwarf star. It will lose its outer layers as it dies and turn into an incredibly dense star the size of Earth.

Known as WD 0346+246 and SDSS J110217, 48+411315.4 (J1102), these stars are located in the constellations Taurus and Ursa Major, respectively. Kilic and colleagues obtained infrared images using NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope to measure the temperature of the stars. And, over a three-year period, they measured J1102's distance by tracking its motion using the MDM Observatory's 2.4m telescope near Tucson, Arizona.

"Most stars stay almost perfectly fixed in the sky, but J1102 is moving at a speed of 600,000 miles per hour and is a little more than 100 light years from Earth," remarks co-author John Thorstensen of Dartmouth College. "We found its distance by measuring a tiny wiggle in its path caused by the Earth's motionit's the size of a dime viewed from 80 miles away."

"Based on the optical and infrared observations of these stars and our analysis, these stars are about 3700 and 3800 degrees on the surface," said co-author Piotr Kowalski of Helmholtz Centre Potsdam in Germany. Kowalski modeled the atmospheric parameters of these stars. Based on these temperature measurements, Kilic and his colleagues were able to estimate the ages of the stars.

"It is like a crime scene investigation," added Kilic. "We measure the temperature of the dead bodyin our case a dead star, then determine the time of the crime. These two white dwarf stars have been dead and cooling off almost for the entire history of the Universe."

Kilic was the lead author on the paper accepted for publication in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. Can Pet Dogs and Cats Enrich Children' Lives? - NYTimes.com

In this era of mommy confessionals, I must admit: I am not a pet person. With their allergic father, I have reared three children without benefit of in-house canines, felines or invited rodents.

But with researchers beginning to focus on children and pets, I find myself interested, though occasionally cynical or defensive.

Pediatricians are asked pet-related questions all the time. What?s the right age to care for a pet? The best way to discuss a pet?s demise? Do we get rid of the cat if one child is allergic to him? Will the dog bite the baby?

For such a tremendously widespread phenomenon as pet ownership, there has been very little research to steer by.

But now researchers are looking at a range of questions, in normal child development, in childhood obesity, in traumatized children and in autism. Dogs, you might say, are having their day.

The research is still limited, but the questions are intriguing, as scientists bring rigor to the study of emotional and psychological effects of pet ownership, along with traditional pediatric concerns of allergies, bites and infections.

?There is evidence that some individual kids seem to benefit from their relationship with these animals,? said James Serpell, director of the Center for the Interaction of Animals and Society at the University of Pennsylvania. ?Everyone wants to know what the mechanism is.?

Many families acquire pets in the first place for the children?s sake, said Alan Beck, director of the Center for the Human-Animal Bond at Purdue University. ?Why do you have an animal? A high percentage, because they believe it?s good for the kids ? and it looks like it is, to some degree.?

There?s a common conviction, for instance, that living with a pet teaches children skills they can use in their social interactions with other humans. ?The belief is that maybe animal-owning children are a little bit more aware unconsciously, have learned nonverbal communication,? Dr. Beck said.

Gail F. Melson, emerita professor of human development and family studies at Purdue, cautions that cause and effect may go in the other direction. Maybe children with greater empathy skills are more likely to develop relationships with animals.

The hope that children may learn empathy and communication skills from animals has led to speculation about pets in the lives of people with autism. Some children who have great difficulty with human social interactions can form deep bonds with animals.

?There is some evidence, but it?s largely anecdotal, that bringing a dog into these households has a dramatic effect on the behavior of these kids,? Dr. Serpell said.

Other experts are trying to look objectively at the increasingly widespread practice of using dogs to calm or comfort children in stressful situations, usually medical or legal. Rebecca Johnson, director of the Research Center for Human-Animal Interaction at the University of Missouri, has begun a randomized clinical trial, financed by the National Institutes of Health, of children undergoing forensic interviews for child abuse; some are given a service dog during their interviews, and physiological indicators of stress are measured.

?A lot of cities and municipalities are using service dogs in courtrooms for children,? she said. ?I really want to identify whether it?s a stress reducer or not.?

With so many children struggling with obesity, dog-walking is being investigated as a strategy to increase exercise in children ? as some studies have shown it can do in adults. ?This is a highly motivating physical activity, when children walk with a dog,? Dr. Johnson said.

This is a departure from the scant discussion of pets decades ago among pediatric researchers, who tended to focus on risks. A 1965 commentary in the journal Pediatrics, ?Pets, Parasites, and Pediatrics,? claimed that ?40 fairly frequent infections of children in this country? could be acquired from animals.

And the advice that doctors have given can be based on personal prejudice, not evidence. In a study done in the 1980s of allergists, for example, those doctors who didn?t own pets were more likely to tell the families of allergic children to give up the animals.

The connection between pets and allergies turns out to be particularly complex. Quite a few studies now suggest that early exposure to animals may have a protective effect. A recent review article that examined a large number of studies found evidence that in children with no family history of allergy, those exposed to dogs in the perinatal period may be less likely to develop allergies.

Pets affect so many children in so many ways ? immune systems, developing social skills, exercise patterns, family circumstances. The effects may be positive, but it?s also true that families who choose to add a pet to the mix may be those who feel at least a small margin of comfort in income, living space and ?perhaps above all, as I look at my own deficits ? family organization and infrastructure.

The strongest evidence of the importance of pets, Dr. Melson said, comes from children themselves, who often cite pets as sources of emotional support.

?The animal is available when you come home from school,? she continued. ?Some species will give you at least the illusion of unconditional acceptance ? at least, if you have a treat in your hand.?

At the same time, researchers invoke a range of less quantifiable but clearly important effects. Growing up with a pet ?gives children a much more inclusive sense of self,? Dr. Serpell said. ?I think it has implications for the relationship of people to the other beings on the planet.?

Prostitutes add to woes for mayor-elect in NM town

SUNLAND PARK, N.M. -- Town leaders were scrambling to find a mayor on Sunday because their mayor-elect is banned from City Hall and accused of a litany of crimes -- from trying to extort an opponent to billing the town for prostitutes and strippers during a border conference last year in Mexico.

Daniel Salinas, 28, was hoping to be sworn in by the Thursday deadline last week but already was facing earlier charges of extortion and bribery after allegedly trying to blackmail his opponent with a tape showing him receiving a lap dance from a topless stripper, said Dona Ana County District Attorney Amy Orlando.

A District Court ruling earlier this year forbid Salinas from entering City Hall or interacting with city employees after those charges, and the state's Supreme Court last week denied a request to have the restrictions lifted so he could be sworn in.

A day after the deadline, Salinas faced more trouble when he was arrested and charged with 18 additional criminal counts of fraud, receiving illegal kickbacks and violation of ethical principles of public service, according to a criminal complaint.

The arrest affidavit lists numerous counts of fraud, primarily for alleged activities during a Border Legislative Conference last year in Saltillo, Mexico.

He was being held Sunday in lieu of $1 million bail.

"These charges clearly show his ties to a corporation in Mexico that was willing to break the law with him, so the court found a million dollars an appropriate bond," Orlando said.

The complaint alleges that Salinas received kickbacks from EnviroSystems Management Consultants Inc., which is based in Flagstaff, Ariz., and has ties to Juarez, Mexico, in exchange for a multi-million-dollar contract with the city. The kickbacks included money for the activities during the conference that are at the center of the charges, according to the complaint.

Through what the complaint described as a "pyramid scheme," Salinas and his alleged cohort with EnviroSystems are accused of trying to bill Sunland Park, a town of about 14,000 near the borders of Texas and Mexico, for "night life" expenses during the November 2011 conference.

The alleged scheme was to have the owner of EnviroSystems, Jorge Angulo, pay per diem and expenses for the city's contingent to the conference -- and those expenses included strip club trips for the entire group and prostitutes for both Salinas and the city's public information officer, Arturo Alba, according to the complaint.

Then Angulo was to bill the city for the expenses, which would be paid back to him from the city's border crossing fund, which is reserved for border-related business, the complaint says.

Efforts to reach Salinas' attorney, Joshua Spencer, for comment on Sunday were unsuccessful.

Orlando said her investigation has led to additional city departments but she declined to elaborate on which ones and what the connections are.

As for who will be the city's mayor, council officials are working with the secretary of state to determine what procedures to follow, Orlando said.

Salinas has so far been indicted on the extortion charge and is pending grand jury on the bribery charges, in addition to Friday's charges that will move through the system this week.

WASHINGTON ? With polls showing support from women giving him an edge over Republican front-runner Mitt Romney, President Barack Obama used a White House conference Friday to tout his administration's work on women's issues and warn that Republicans would erase the achievements.

Though he never mentioned Romney - or the word Republican - in his 20-minute speech, Obama cautioned an auditorium of female entrepreneurs, academics and business leaders against returning "to the policies that got us into so many of the problems that we've been dealing with in the first place. That's what's at stake."

"When it comes to our efforts on behalf of women and girls, I'm proud of the accomplishments that we can point to," he said. He cited the first bill he signed into law, making it easier for women to demand equal pay, along with efforts to boost the number of girls taking science and math classes. "We've got a lot more to do. But there's no doubt we've made progress."

Citing his signature health care law - which Republicans and Romney have vowed to repeal - Obama charged that "they're not just saying we should stop protecting women with pre-existing conditions. They're also saying we should kick about a million young women off their parents' health care plans."

He also took issue with GOP support for cutting government funding of Planned Parenthood, saying: "They're not just talking about restricting a woman's ability to make her own health decision. They're talking about denying, as a practical matter, the preventive care like mammograms that millions of women rely on."

His remarks at the White House Forum on Women and the Economy came as Romney this week strengthened his grip on the GOP nomination and as polls indicate that Obama is benefiting from the national debate over access to contraceptives. At the event, some of the loudest applause followed his remarks that under his health care law, women would receive contraception "at no additional cost."

A USA Today/Gallup poll this week found Obama leading Romney among women by 18 points in 12 key battleground states. A McClatchy-Marist national poll found Obama leading Romney among female voters by 48 percent to 42 percent, and by 49 percent to 40 percent vs. Rick Santorum.

The gender gap between the parties is decades old, Marist pollster Lee Miringoff said. But it widened as the parties argued over the Obama administration's decision to require religious-affiliated institutions to provide contraceptive coverage to employees.

"You saw the mobilization of the Democratic base when the narrative switched to women's health," Miringoff said. "That gap is wider because of the dustup, and that's not lost on the campaigns."

Romney, who was asked about the gender gap when he spoke before the American Society of News Editors on Wednesday, noted that Republicans traditionally have faced a gender gap and accused Democrats of doing an "effective job" of "trying to mischaracterize" the party's stance on women's issues.

Romney added that he expects to attract both men and women by focusing on "the issues that women and men care most about" - namely, the economy.

He said his wife, Ann - a significant presence on the campaign trail - "reports to me regularly that the issue that women care about most is the economy. They're concerned about high gasoline prices, the cost of getting to and from work. That's what women care about in this country, and my vision is to get America working again."

Romney pollster Neil Newhouse said he expects the numbers to narrow as the general election ramps up. He said the economy will remain the focus.

"I think the real Obama record is a failure to create jobs and to get the economy moving," he said.

But Laura Murphy, director of the ACLU's Washington legislative office - who thanked Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius at Friday's White House conference for the decision to require contraceptive coverage - said that women are unusually motivated by what they see as an effort to retreat on issues like contraception.

"It's just shocking to me that something like contraception is so controversial; we thought we won that battle decades ago," she said. "These are policies that affect women's lives."

Administration officials insisted before the event that it was not political, noting that Obama convened the White House Council on Women and Girls that hosted the event soon after taking office. They noted it was being held only a few days after March - Women's History Month.

But Obama - who appears in more than a dozen pictures in a 65-page progress report issued by the council - sounded a number of political points, arguing that the "conversation" over women's issues "has been oversimplified."

"Women are not some monolithic bloc," he said. "Women are not an interest group. You shouldn't be treated that way."

He expressed incredulity that expansion of an 18-year-old federal law that created a national strategy to prevent domestic violence against women has been blocked in Congress. Opponents fear it would broaden American Indian tribal rights and has too many protections for gay and illegal immigrant victims of violence.

"When something like the Violence Against Women Act ... is suddenly called to question, that makes no sense," he said. "That's not something we should still be arguing about."

Obama - who noted that 80 percent of his household is female - called his commitment to women's issues "personal." He talked about the single mother who raised him, his grandmother who watched as younger men she had trained were promoted ahead of her, and of his wife and two daughters.

"As a father, one of my highlights of every day is asking my daughters about their day, their hopes and their futures," he said. "Every decision I make is all about making sure they and all our daughters and all our sons grow up in a country that gives them the chance to be anything they set their minds to."

But he acknowledged one unmet goal.

"We haven't gotten the dry cleaning thing yet," Obama said in a joking reference to constant complaints that dry cleaners charge women more than men to launder their garments. "I know that that's still frustrating, I'm sure."

All of these SUVs are designed for comfortable, family-friendly on-road use.

Those still looking for something with more brawn than comfort should turn to today?s Nissan Pathfinder. Mechanically related to the Nissan Frontier pickup truck, it has an available V8 engine, can go off-road, and is capable of towing a 7,000-pound trailer. In fact, it?s one of the last midsize SUVs to hold out against the push for family-friendly crossovers. Here?s a closer look at the SUVs that were unveiled.

2013 Nissan Pathfinder
The new, redesigned 2013 Pathfinder, on display in a preview concept form at the 2012 New York International Auto Show, is going the way of the Ford Explorer by switching from rear-wheel-drive architecture to a lighter-duty front-wheel-drive construction. These changes will allow for a smoother ride, better on-road handling, and a roomier interior.?When a production version is unveiled later this year, it will face off against several newly unveiled crossover models: an all-new 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe and updated versions of the Buick Enclave and Chevrolet Traverse, as well as the Explorer and such models as the Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander.

2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport
The new Santa Fe, which debuted at the auto show Wednesday, will be offered in two sizes: a five seat ?Sport? model and a seven-seat model, which is a longer version with three rows of seats. The Sport model?s four-cylinder engines will be music to the ears of many drivers, as it promises class-leading fuel economy of up to 33 miles per gallon on the highway. The Santa Fe Sport will slot directly above the smaller, less expensive Tucson.?The seven-seat model has a powerful 290-horsepower V6, and it?will replace the slow-selling Veracruz as Hyundai?s largest SUV.

2013 Chevrolet Traverse
The 2013 Chevrolet Traverse, also unveiled Wednesday, sported a shiny new grille and a revised interior. A cool new safety feature was also added: The Traverse holds a first-of-its-kind airbag that deploys between the front seats to keep passengers from bouncing off each other in an accident. The 2013 Buick Enclave, shown earlier this week, and the 2013 GMC Acadia that debuted earlier this year at the Chicago Auto Show, offer more of the same, but with more luxury touches.?Though these models are old by automotive standards ? their basic design dates to 2007 ? GM hopes relatively minor tweaks will keep these cars competitive.

2013 Honda Crosstour
Another new crossover shown at the New York show is a concept car previewing the 2013 Honda Crosstour, a bigger, taller all-wheel-drive hatchback version of the popular midsize Accord. The Crosstour, formerly called the Accord Crosstour, has been something of a sales dud since it went on sale as a 2010 model. Honda hopes a new grille, a revised interior and more features will make the difference.

Subaru XV Crosstrek
Subaru is also showing a tall hatchback at the show: The compact Impreza-based XV Crosstrek is making its North American debut. It has a higher ride height than the Impreza and a few different styling touches, but it?s nearly identical to that car ? right down to its 36 mile-per-gallon highway mileage rating, better than any non-hybrid SUV.

Luxury SUVs Compete With More Affordable Options
Cadillac, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz also each introduced updated premium crossover SUVs at the New York show. The 2013 Cadillac SRX has modified styling and new features; the 2013 Lexus RX made its North American debut sporting a new front end; and Mercedes-Benz showed a 2013 GLK and GL with revised interior and exterior styling, and a new fuel-efficient diesel engine on the GLK.?Additionally, BMW debuted the first U.S.-specification of the X1 compact crossover, which was already on sale in other world markets and will start from a relatively affordable $30,650. Some even more affordable crossovers unveiled this week at the New York Auto Show include the updated 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, 2013 Subaru Outback and 2013 Toyota Venza, which each saw fairly minor design changes.
